To help explain the diversity of trauma experiences, this diagram visualizes key aspects such as the nature of trauma. Trauma may occur as acute trauma- a single isolated event; chronic trauma- repeated exposure over time; and complex trauma- multiple, varied traumatic events or ongoing interpersonal trauma.
Body response: Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fawn reactions. Somatic symptoms (e.g., muscle tension or soreness, fatigue, and racing heart)
Mind Response: Confusion, dissociation, or memory gaps. Beliefs like, "I should be okay now," "It wasn't a big deal," or "It happened so long ago."
Emotion response: Persistent sadness, fear, guilt or shame. Sudden emotional triggers that feel disproportionate.
